Running Trails on Long Island
Long Island Running has a list of Favorite Runs on the Island and Bob Anastasio writes:
I am not sure about all of the runs but the following [ones on the list] are certainly trail runs:
- Cathedral Pine County Park
- Flauders Bay SouthHampton
- Hampton Bay, Red Creek Path
- Ponquogue Bridge/Hampton Bays
- Shoreham/Wading River
- David Weld Nature Preserve (see reference in the St. James 5 Mile run)
The best trail runs on LI are probably the Greenbelt Trails which run the length of Long Island from north to south. I am not sure if there are web links to actual trails but there is plenty of info about The Greenbelt Trail Conference, which I think maintains the trails.
At Cool Running, TheresaO adds the following about the LI trails:
The Bethpage bike path is the one that is near or part of the greenbelt trail. From Sunrise Highway in Massapequa to the picnic grounds is 6.5 miles. It does go further though, all the way to the Northshore. This is by far my Favorite place to run. Really spectacular.
